ACO2 WA Regional Tour

ACO2 WA Regional Tour

Between shifts in the trenches on the beaches of Gallipoli, Australian composer Frederick Kelly bunkered down in his tent to work on an emotional piece of music in memory of his recently departed brother-in-arms and poet, Rupert Brooke. In Memoriam Rupert Brooke now holds a special place in Australian history, simultaneously capturing the sorrow of seeing a dear friend pass away, and the peace in knowing that this soldier's time in the hell of war would soon be over.

From 2014 to 2018, Australia and New Zealand will commemorate the ANZAC Centenary, remembering the brave men and women who served in World War I through to those serving overseas at present. To coincide with this, ACO2 - the Australian Chamber Orchestra's regional touring arm, will be bringing a special program to Western Australia, including a performance at BREC on Wednesday 9 April at 7.30pm.

The program will feature Port Essington by Australian composter Peter Sculthorpe, as well as Frederick Kelly's aforementioned work, bolstered by nostalgic favourites from JS Bach, CPE Bach and more.

KELLY - Elegy for Strings 'In Memoriam Rupert Brooke'
JS BACH - Violin Concerto No.1 in A minor
CPE BACH - String Symphony No. 1 in G major
CARTER- Elegy for String Orchestra
WALTON - Sonata for Strings

ACO2 comprises core musicians from the ACO and talented young string players from the ACO'S Emerging Artists Program. The WA tour will feature 2014 Emerging Artists Zoe Freisberg, Emily Sheppard, Katie Yap and Rebecca Proietto playing alongside ACO2 director and lead violinist Helen Rathbone and ACO violinist Aiko Goto. They will be backed by a swathe of Emerging Artist alumni including Peter Clark, Lachlan O'Donnell, Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba, Christina Katsimbardis, William Clark, Eve Silver, Paul Zabrowarny and Josef Bisits.

Since it began touring in 2007, ACO2 has visited Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, playing to regional audiences hungry for world-class classical music shows, performing schools concerts and conducting string workshops for thousands of music students. By the end of 2013, the ensemble has taught, coached and performed in over 180 regional centres around Australia.
